| EXPRESSIONIST PORTRAITS ALYCE FRANK at the Blumenschein Museum TAOS NM 03.09-05.03.2014 Best known and widely admired for her expressionist landscapes of Northern New Mexico and the Southwest, few people are familiar with Alyce Frank Portraiture. Throughout her long career Alyce painted portraits of family and friends from Arroyo Hondo and Taos. She did this in her studio during the winter months when it was too cold to paint plein aire. The portraits are often psychological abstractions rather than an illustrative depiction. They are expressive, sometimes alarming, always characterized by her bold use of color. The works often mirror a particular characteristic of the subject. The Blumenshein exhibition presents many individuals from the Taos area, spanning the late 1970’s into 2001. |
